How to handle customer complaint is a science and an art. Big companies tend to absorb losses rather than turn the customer away. I remember the time when Sears would take back a pair of shoes after a year of use. People also were taking advantage of the return policy and returned a party dress after a party. But then big companies are just that, they are able to absorb those losses without batting an eye. The upshot though is that they have consumer confidence knowing that things they buy from that store can be returned any time.
I fear small companies do not have that luxury and the profit margin does not allow them to do just that. But I do feel attitude is so important. If I were the store manager I would do this: Yes we do have to let the manufacturer to verify if the appliance has been misused, but in the mean time I will sell you a new one for 10% of the cost. If the manufacturer comes back and say that the returned merchandise is defective, then the 10% cost will be returned to the customer. That's just my take, Please do take it with a grain of salt.

Rain Tree is correct concerning the support of Chinese operated store, but my argument is slightly different. I do not treat any Chinese store different. But if I find one that is honest and good, I will go out of my way to promote that store.

For example I had a Mr. Lee do my basement renovation and it turned out that he did an excellent job. Very tidy and the finishing work is the best among those who worked at my house, Chinese/non-Chinese included. So I recommended him to everybody and now I cannot get him to do any work because he is too busy. :(

Buckwheattobe, you are the MAN!!!

How did you get English so well? I will apprecaite if you can share some good suggestion on that and we can all benefit by learning:-)

By nature, the Chinese stores have the advantages:
Language for better communication; Niche commodity for our own culture.
They need to find out a way to leverage but not abuse these advantages.

Been here too long. If you want to start another thread, we can discuss. I try not to threadjack.
