Police warn drivers to clear snow and ice off cars

It's a common sight to see cars covered in snow driving down the roads, but Ottawa Police are reminding drivers that they run the risk of getting a $110 fine if they do not take the time to get out the snow brush.
In Glen Cairn, Const. Phil Kane pulled over 63 cars in 90 minutes on Wednesday.
"The real shocking thing was, I would walk out of my car with my snow brush and I would start clearing their cars for them and out of the 63 drivers only five drivers actually said 'no, no, officer, I'll get out and I'll clean it. You've made your point,'" Kane told CFRA.
Kane received a number of excuses as to why the snow and ice had not properly been removed from the cars, including that the drivers were only going a couple of blocks or that it was too cold to stand outside and clean off their vehicle.
"The disturbing thing that I'm finding is a lot of these cars are driving by intersections or school areas and the parents are driving their kids to school, but they're not able to see out the windows properly," he said. "Headlights are covered, so drivers coming from the other way can't see the vehicle, no turn signals, nothing."
He said all of those drivers received verbal warnings.
"The time it would take for me to get back in the car and do a charge, or even a written warning, I would allow maybe another 20 cars to go by me covered completely in snow," he said. "I took it as an opportunity okay, you know what, I'm going to start pulling everyone over so at one point there was a row of eight or nine cars and every driver is out clearing snow along with me."
"Other people are driving by and giving me thumbs up and saying 'thank you so much,'" he added. One grateful woman even came back to bring him a cup of coffee.
Kane was back at it in the same spot Friday morning.
He said he noticed the cars he had pulled over earlier in the week were now spotless - the drivers had gotten the message.
"They pulled up alongside me and said 'I learned my lesson the other day. Thank you,'" he said.
