Shares of Reseach In Motion Ltd. rose more than 7% in both Toronto and New York on Tuesday, following reports that the BlackBerry maker is preparing to unveil a corporate shakeup that could see co-founders Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie relinquish their titles as co-chairmen of the board.
RIM’s stock rose as high as $15.98 on the Toronto Stock Exchange, while on the Nasdaq Stock Market in New York, shares of the BlackBerry maker hit a high of US$15.83. While shares have receded somewhat, they’re still trading up about 6.5%.
The stock surge was welcome news for RIM investors after suffering through a disastrous 2011, which saw shares of RIM fall more than 75% over 12 months, erasing billions of dollars off the company’s market capitalization.
On Tuesday morning, the Financial Post published a story suggesting Barbara Stymiest, an independent director who joined RIM’s board in 2007, is believed to be the leading candidate to replace Messrs. Balsillie and Lazaridis as chair, sources familiar with events said.
Also on Tuesday, RIM announced it was reducing the price of all its BlackBerry PlayBook tablets to $299 until Feb. 4.
