Yes, drive can be used as a verb or as a noun.

For example, It is a two-hour drive from Place A to Place B.

But using the gerund form can paint a more vivid picture la.

Our LZ is correct, both grammatically and usage wise.

When one says 'drive home', the 'drive' means the journey in essence.
When one says '..driving home', one tends to focus on the act of driving, such as steering and negotiating the car.
