I lived in Vancouver for 10 years and have also lived in all different regions in Canada. I hate Vancouver and do not like living there for a number of reasons.
1. Vancouver's winter is very much like that in Southeast England, rainy and dark all the time. As the sky is overcast on most days from October to April, it feels as if the sun rises very late and sets early. Basically, it is light only from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm from November to February.
2. Vancouver has a Mediterranean-like climate: wet in winter and dry in summer. Therefore, lots of people develop severe hay fever after living there for a couple of years. It is the same climate along the West Coast all the way down to California.
3. Vancouver and BC in general were historically the most racist region towards Asians in Canada. Both the Chinese Exclusion Act and the Japanese Internment before WWII originated from BC. I find that the white people there are still the same today. If you only socialize and work within the Asian community, you will be fine; otherwise expect way more racism than here. I had lots of extremely bad experience of racism when I lived in Vancouver. Ottawa is not perfect, but is paradise when compared to Vancouver as far as racism is concerned. Remember different ethnic groups are treated differently in different parts of Canada and the US. You may hear, for example, black people telling you that Ottawa or the Maritimes are really bad, but it is specific to them, not to you and me. Blacks are fine in Vancouver, but not us.
4. The St. Andrea's fault extends all the way from California to BC, and therefore BC is susceptible to severe earthquakes and even tsunamis.
5. Racism aside, people in BC have an attitude that I find very snotty. If you live here long enough, you will know what I mean.
6. The crime rate is much higher than here, and this is true for both property crimes and major crimes. There are lots more break-ins, car theft and gang-related crimes there. You can check the news and the statistics. I just felt unsafe in a lot of areas in Greater Vancouver.
7. Just like most people have already said, the house prices are just ridiculous in Vancouver, and I believe that the bubble will burst really badly over there.
8. The job market in BC is very bad when compared to Central Canada. There are no big companies or government presence and average pay is at least 30% lower than here (and yet house prices are 3X higher). Coupled with racism towards Asians, the job market is just hell.
9. Traffic is terrible in the Greater Vancouver area. There is no intracity highway because the environmentalists do not want it. The city streets are always in a gridlock. Certain bottlenecks like the bridges connecting the North Shore (West Vancouver and North Vancouver) are basically congested 24 hours a day.
