To the alphanin the beautiful world

Happy to see so many people are contributing here.

美丽世界的孤儿:

I know to make a a documentary movie depicting the life of Chinese here is not a easy thing. However, it is still doable. You need to look at 1 year to 2 to make it complete if not more. I suggest you start with some short movies recording the Chinese involvement in the local events . A practical one is the dragonboat contest. You can simply document the whole process of how Come from China Team is organized: all the meetings, the preparation jobs, interview of people internal and external to the team- how they see and involve in this event, the performance in the game, and some post game activities. After adding music, cutting and editting these materials, you can tell a story on some aspect of life here.It must be fun! I do not think there is any copy rights ,intellectual property or privacy issues involved in such a documentary process. After you finishit, you can make it available on line here.I am sure people will like it!

This is only a very practical example. You may well come up with some better idea. To apply for funding from related organizations, you need a proposal which introduces the theme of your work and the operation procedures and budget projection. You also need some hard samples to demonstrate that you have the ability to make the idea into hard products. If you could start making ome shotties like the above mentioned example, you can also make yourself exposed to the audience and the Chinese community. Like it or not, you also have to build up your credit in the community and to attract recognition from potential interviewees.

Some more suggestions may derive from a simple SWOT analysis on you with respect to the projected initiative:

Strength:
You have:
1. Close to professional equipment and skills.
2. Some developed idea about the project( the proposed movie)
3. Some previous effort and experiences towards the project,i.e. you have tried to interview people b4 though failed.
4. Established recognition in the on-line Chinese Community ( www. comefromchina.com bbs ).You can easily get help from this spcific ommunity as well as from your own circle of friends.

Weakness:
1. Lack of funding
2.lack of awareness and recognition in local Chinese community at large.
3. Lack of information and experience of the business operation process on the subject industry.
4. Lack of professional help.

Opportunities:
1. Canadian Government encourage the development of multiculture related initiatives. This may lead to possible funding allocation.
2. Local Chinese community at large has the rising need to have such a documentary initiative to record our life here. This will lead to strong support in the operation process.
3. There are some certain groups willing and available to be interviewed. Also, some groups are potential interviewees as they are shy of doing it. There is a chance to make them involved.
4. Various ongoing and upcoming events/activities provide a rich source of stories.
5. There is a strong interest from Canadian media.

Threat:

1. Privacy issue.
2. Competing initiatives for funding.
3. Time and the validity of materials as time goes.
4. Increasing cost as the project proceeds.
5. Refusal and uncooperation from some potential interviewees.
6. Related regulations in the subject industry.
7. Some possible equipment damage or unfunctioning.

The above analysis and suggestions are for your reference.

The upcoming BBQ is another chance where you can shoot some test movies.
