Trouble

If CIC ask the proof of residency, mostly the whole copy of the passport, you will be screwed. Where are they?
If they are in Canada, the best approach would be Don't renew for another 3 years.

If they are in China: Big trouble! Maybe try to renew anyway, hope for the best.
