'An epidemic' of bad driving behaviour 118

A 58-year-old Ottawa man nabbed eating rotisserie chicken while driving with his knees is the latest in a rash of bad behaviour behind the wheel that police say is becoming an epidemic.

From bizarre driver food choices to personal grooming in the rear-view mirror, local traffic cops say there's no shortage of motorists who concentrate on anything but driving.

"I stopped a guy who was eating a bowl of porridge," said Ottawa OPP Const. Rheal Levac, who admits after years on the road, he doubts he's seen it all. "He was hanging onto the bowl and steering wheel with one hand and a spoon with the other."

Police patrollers have no trouble rattling off tales of traffic woes: from women applying makeup and men shaving to other drivers using utensils to eat, playing with computers, reading just about anything or even watching TV while trying to navigate traffic.

In the latest incident on Tuesday, a man sped by an unmarked OPP car along Hwy. 417, near Nicholas St., weaving and tailgating other motorists. The officer saw the driver had a white china bowl balanced on his lap and was driving with his knees while he enjoyed some rotisserie chicken.

"He was late for a meeting, so I guess (he was) going to kill two birds with one stone," said Levac.

Though some laugh at the incident, officers note such distracted and careless driving can be deadly. And police say it only seems to be getting worse.

"We've had the makeup lady, we've had the salad guy, we've had the lady playing with an iPod," said Ottawa police Sgt. Al Ferris, with the traffic section. "It's become a real epidemic recently. Everyone's doing it now."

One woman on the phone was recently tailed by Ferris for about 2 km before she was pulled over. She then claimed Ferris must have been mistaken about her phone use. Only when Ferris described the phone did she recant.

"Ottawa drivers are unique. They're a rare breed," said Ferris, who has more than two decades of experience on the roads. "It's the attitude here."

Distracted driving is a major factor in serious crashes or deaths, say police, who promise the public they're on the prowl.

"People continue to do it. They take their lives and everyone's safety in their own hands," said Levac.

In the chicken case, Michael Gibson has been charged with careless driving and issued a $490 fine.

Following are some examples of bad behaviour police have seen behind the wheel:

  • A man eating a rotisserie chicken as he drove with his knees
  • A man eating a bowl of porridge (bowl and wheel in one hand, spoon in the other)
  • A driver with a binder balanced on the steering wheel while taking an order on a business call
  • Women putting on mascara (and other makeup) while driving
  • Men shaving with an electric razor
  • A man using utensils to eat potato salad
  • A woman playing with a tablet computer
  • Drivers looking at a map
  • Drivers reading a book
  • Drivers watching a movie
  • Drivers texting and talking
