Carney to head Bank of England by 2013!

Yes yes.

国情不同,只能靠很好的luck了。

Mr. Carney's new appointment came as a surprise if not completely unexpected.

I am very impressed with Mr. Carney's educational/career background , but don't have much to say about his accomplishments as the Governor of BoC. Yes he has led the institution through a tough time, and yes Canadian economy outperformed its peers in G8 and/or OECD. But I think it really should be attributed to Canada's economic characteristics and its strong financial framework rather than to policy makers.

Regarding the first point - Canada is resource-rich and heavily dependent on U.S. economy. In the past few years, BoC mostly followed the directions and paces set by Bernanke / Fed in making its monetary policies. The abundant supply of currency has not resulted in unchained inflation thanks to the slow recovery in global economy, yet Canada's rich resources helped boosting its own growth and C$.

With respect to the robust banking industry in Canada that had avoided a meltdown during the financial crisis, BoC probably could not take much credit from it, as banking regulatory responsibilities are in the domains of DoF/OSFI, not BoC.

I guess Mr. Carney's new appointment might have to do with the induction of Canadian dollar as a world reserve currency, and the desire of establishing a closely tied global financial system. It will surely be an important and tough job. If he does well, he will certainly become a Sir or even Lord in a few years. I agree with CCC, "国情不同,只能靠很好的luck了"。

Anyway, it is a big achievement of Mr. Carney personally and Canadian economists in general. For this, he deserves a hurray!

“Carney said he is accepting the new job at a “decisive” time in the history of the Bank of England, which is taking on new regulatory responsibilities as Europe grapples with recessionary conditions.
。。。

It was a “difficult decision” but the right one for him.

。。。

Always a high flyer, Carney clearly views the new job as a chance to take on an even greater role in the world financial system.

“This is a major challenge,” he told the media in Ottawa. He said it’s vital for the world economy that Britain overcome the banking problems and economic malaise it has faced since the recession hit in 2008.

“I was never going to be the governor of the Bank of Canada forever,” he quipped.

。。。”

So many strong underwater writers on the board.

This small comment should be composed by a frequent MC writer, an EC, or an analyst with solid policy backgrounds.

:D
