OTTAWA — The 25-year-old man accused of killing his roommate in their Meadowlands Drive apartment
grinned for most of his first court appearance Friday. The body of 21-year-old Jai Le Zhao was found inside the bloody, third-floor apartment after police were called for a disturbance at around 3:30 a.m. Thursday.
Keith Ru was escorted into court Friday wearing black clothing while his mother covered her mouth and wept. His hair was dishevelled, he grinned and made bizarre facial expressions as an interpreter translated from English to Cantonese.
“Hi,” Ru said to the justice of the peace.
At one point, Ru appeared to almost laugh.
Ru’s parents came from Toronto for their son’s court appearance and were assisted by a translator.
Before declining the use of the translator himself, Ru was ordered not to communicate with 17 people, mostly residents in the apartment at 1189 Meadowlands Dr. where Jai was killed.
A justice of the peace asked Ru is he understood what was going on in court.
“Yes I do,” Ru said in English.
Speaking to reporters outside court, Ru’s lawyer, Oliver Abergel, said he believed his client suffered from mental health problems.
Ru is scheduled to appear in court next on Dec. 13.
