离开北京的美国小伙回来了:美利坚随时受不了


话说乔治，一个漂在北京5年的美利坚小伙，两个多月前决意回国，与那些还在北京混事的狐朋好友依依惜别，高调地踏上了回乡路。

　可是，刚刚两个月过去，他乔治就又回来了!他知道他的朋友们都会赶脚很奇怪：不是刚刚参加了他的告别派对吗?我不是刚从这家伙那里买了书架吗?Ithought you were sick of China. What convinced you to comeback?(你不是对中国不感冒到腻味了吗，肿么又回来啦?)
　　被问得多了，乔治干脆在北京外国人圈的Beijinger上发了帖子解释他重返北京的原因----Why I am Coming Back toChina。

　　First of all, I never said I was sick of China(首先，我从没说过我对中国腻味了)

　　Second of all, I’m even more sick of the UnitedStates.(第二先，我对合众国更腻味)。

　　具体一些的理由还包括：

　　----回去后又开始用钢镚儿，弄得裤兜沉甸甸的，很别扭。

　　----找不着符合我的经验的工作，那些雇主家伙不是对我在中国5年的经历不感兴趣，就是奇怪怎么偶跟那里混了5年还不会讲中文。

　　----住在父母家的地下室里的随时受不了，e.g.老妈的唠叨：When are you going to get a job? Whenare you going to move out of the basement? Did you take $40 fromthe cash drawer? etc.

　　----遇上不爽的事用英语发牢骚说几句脏话，却忘记了周围这帮家伙也能听得懂。

　　更重要的原因是，乔治回到了自己的祖国再也体会不到在北京时作为老外所享受的特殊关注和关照。于是，在一天被老妈逼着清扫了自己蜗居的地下室之后，饱受反向文化震荡的乔治经过反思，终于明白了：Sure, you can get ice water everywhere, but what good is that whenyou can’t hire an ayi to clean your room foryou?(没错，在这里到处有冰水，可是一个你都无法雇阿姨为你打扫地下室的国度到底有什么好)?

　　地下室里，痛定思痛的乔治又从抽屉了拿了老妈的一点美刀，义无反顾地买了去中国的单程票这么又回来了。

　　It’s nice to beback.他赶脚着只有这里才适应他这种屌丝：再也不用给小费啦，不受餐馆伙计的白眼啦，又可以自由下载音乐啦，又可以不用钢镚啦。教富家孩子学英语一个小时三百块，这么好的事就是让我从此能登陆Youtube和Facebook也不换滴。

　　Go ahead, call me a Loser Back Home. No more running around, Ipromise. No sir – this time, I’m here to stay.

　　对了，whoever bought my bookcase: I’m going to need thatback(谁买了我的书架，我还得用呢!)

When Noel Muller returned to Toronto from China in 2010, he was thrilled to be home. Within a few months, however, the then-28-year-old teacher, fed up with unemployment—and with bunking in his mom’s basement—was back on a plane bound for China. Muller had spent a year in Jilin, a small city in China’s northeast, teaching English to local children. He’d been homesick, especially toward the end, and keen to start a permanent teaching career in Ontario. But within weeks of returning, Muller realized that might not be an option for him.

With the economy in the tank, he says, “all the jobs dried up.” And in a year in which over two-thirds of education graduates were unemployed, Muller certainly wasn’t being picky. He was applying for everything from tutoring positions to teacher’s assistant spots to a job teaching English as a second language. Then he got a call from his old boss in Jilin. “He was pretty desperate to have me back,” he says, “and offered me a substantial pay raise.” For Muller, it was an easy choice. “Adventure may have brought me here the first time,” he says, “but monetary considerations certainly brought me back.”

“I’m really comfortable here. I have the nicest apartment I’ve ever lived in. I go out and eat and drink. I spend as much money on entertainment as I want, I travel on every vacation, and at the end of the month I still save half of my paycheque. That’s just not going to happen in Toronto.”
