OTTAWA — Ly-Huong Ta and Ngoc Dao have a double garage in their new, $438,000 house in Kanata that won’t fit one car, let alone two.
The problem is a bulky staircase that developer Phoenix Homes was required to put in because of the difference in elevations between the garage floor and the main level of the house. The garage floor is almost a metre below the main level.
The staircase, which includes five steps, landing, railing and hand support, leads to a door on the main level. But the structure eats up at least a metre of parking space across much of the back wall, reducing its depth to just over five metres.
That’s not enough room for the couple’s Mazda 5, a standard-size vehicle. Even with its nose nudged up to the staircase, the back end of the Mazda sticks out from under the garage door by a few inches. A friend of the couple tried to fit his Honda Accord in the garage, but it stuck out by about a foot.
