Ottawa is under a freezing rain warning after the city received more than 13 centimetres of snow as slick roads and sidewalks cancelled buses and created dangerous driving conditions.

The precipitation is expected to last late into the evening, Black added, before turning to rain.

Environment Canada said a "low pressure system from Colorado will bring in another surge of moisture" leading to between three and six hours of freezing rain.

"Most areas will likely receive one to three millimetres of freezing rain, with higher amounts near five millimetres possible over the Ottawa Valley," according to Environment Canada's forecast.

City of Ottawa crews were busy overnight clearing snow off the roads and sidewalks in anticipation of the freezing rain. The overnight parking restriction was lifted Tuesday morning.

School buses were cancelled for the Upper Canada District School Board, the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario and all English school buses in Renfrew County. Buses were also cancelled for all French-speaking public schools in Ottawa.

Exams were pushed back one day at those school boards.

Ottawa's English-speaking public and Catholic school boards do have buses running and exams are running on schedule, as do those school boards in Gatineau and western Quebec.

Ottawa police said they logged more than 100 crashes Monday due to the snowfall. There were no serious injuries, however.

SUMMARY
Freezing rain later today in all regions and likely lasting well into tonight in the Ottawa Valley.

DETAILS
An approaching low pressure system from Colorado will bring in another surge of moisture beginning later this morning setting the stage for an area of freezing rain to redevelop over the region Ontario this morning. Freezing rain will likely last 3 to 6 hours over southern areas before a warm front moves through by this evening resulting in a changeover to rain. However the warm front will have some difficulty getting across the Ottawa Valley tonight and as a result freezing rain there may last well into the overnight hours. Most areas will likely receive 1 to 3 mm of freezing rain, with higher amounts near 5 mm possible over the Ottawa Valley. The warm front will finally pass through the Ottawa Valley into Quebec by Wednesday morning, with a changeover to rain and much milder temperature expected. Untreated roads will likely become icy and treacherous over many regions. Motorists and pedestrians should exercise caution and allow for extra time to reach their destination. In addition, freezing rain can damage power lines and bring down tree limbs especially over northern regions into the Ottawa Valley where it is expected to last longer. Please refer to the public forecast for further details.
