the Lunar New Year Lion Dance Parade in the Ottawa Chinatown
February 16, 2013 1pm to 2:30 pm
On Somerset Street from Preston Street to Bay Street
Ottawa, Ontario, November 20 , 2012 – Somerset Street Chinatown Business Improvement Area (BIA) is excited to partner with theNCC in 2013 Winterlude for its annual lion dance parade during the lunar new year onSaturday February 16, 2013 starting at1 pm.
The Chinese Lion Dance goes back over one thousand years. The first record of the performance of an early form of the lion dance dates to the early Qing and Han Dynasties (Third century B.C.).
At the beginning of the lunar New Year in Chinatown, lion dance groups tour from business to business to bring good fortune and to ward off evil spirits.
Come to experience the tradition, hear the fire crackers, and get your New Year good fortune by following the lion dance parade in the Ottawa Chinatown – a multicultural village with an Asian flavour! To celebrate Winterlude in Chinatown, all the zodiacs will come to join the lion dance this year! You would not want to miss this extravaganza!

The Somerset Street Chinatown BIA’s mission is to improve, promote and undertake projects that will result in a stronger and more competitive commercial district known as the Ottawa Chinatown. Come celebrate our Canadian winter with a spectacle of winter wonders, as the spirits of great Canadian explorers emerge onto the plaza. This multi-sensory evening features musical performances, aerial dancers, interactive projections, a public art illumination display, pyrotechnic effects and a DJ dance party.
Featuring: Insolita, Look-Up aerial art, Créations in Vivo and Ottawa’s own A Tribe Called Red.

Location Info: Rideau Canal Skateway (Dows Lake), 1001 Queen Elizabeth Drive Ottawa, ON
Fifty teams race modified beds in heats down a 50-metre course to help determine the fastest bed.
In addition, there is a competition for the best fundraiser, and the best costumes and bed decoration.
This is a fun event for teams of all ages, so come on out, have fun and help support the community.
