He only needs to go to any Chinese school in Canada, such as those in Ottawa, and he would have opposite opinions.

Or maybe he wants to do business with Chinese government when he or she is retired!

Go to Chinese schools in Canada to collect data about Chinese education? That's like comparing apples and oranges. I don't believe any people who have been involved in any serious research projects in any manner would make such a suggestion. :p

I am tired of answering people's question that seems to come endless. Let me put this way: academic record is important but not the most important, thinking you are agreeable with this; or I can put it this way, the math marks and etc are only the shell, but the way of thinking, civility and proper life style are the core.

When you are in a Chinese school, you get the sense of a rotted core, and then what else you still want?

High academic marks, kids passing piano level 8, etc, who still think parking along the fire route is okay, who instantly alerts and "get into business" when dealing with own fellow Chinese while relaxes dealing with whites...

What an unique group of people. I am a Chinese but I have long thought I am a different kind of Chinese. Sorry no time checking spelling and no time to type any more reply!

Developing positive character and social skills is important. That's for sure. And I recognize that's been a major problem with Chinese education. But I also believe those two key aspects of education (note I'm not using "schooling") depend much more on parents and students' peers than on teachers.

And they're more or less irrelevant to this thread.

As far as "basic education", by which I would assume George Bluman primarily meant the cultivation of fundamental academic skills and the building of a sound knowledge base for further learning, i.e., the academic basics, Chinese education did and is still doing a great job.

On a personal note, my fourth-grader son goes to an elementary school ranking very high on the Fraser Institute chart. The fact is I've been appalled by the poor spelling, grammatical and mathematical abilities exhibited by many of his classmates. And seriously, some of them think of Ontario as being larger in area than Canada - at the age of 9 /10.
