Venom

Garter snakes were long thought to be nonvenomous, but recent discoveries have revealed they do, in fact, produce a mild neurotoxic venom.[4] Garter snakes cannot kill humans with the small amounts of comparatively mild venom they produce, and they also lack an effective means of delivering it. They do have enlarged teeth in the back of their mouths, but their gums are significantly larger.[5][6] The Duvernoy's glands of garters are posterior (to the rear) of the snake's eyes.[7] The mild venom is spread into wounds through a chewing action.

Gatineau woman shocked by snake in tub
DOUG HEMPSTEAD, Ottawa Sun

A Gatineau woman taking a morning bathroom break on Feb. 25 spotted a snake in her tub.
A real snake - not the tool plumbers use.
The python slithered out and hid behind the toilet while she ran for the phone.
The woman, who didn't want to be identified, was so frightened at the sight of the two-foot reptile she called 911.
Police suspect the snake belongs to someone in the woman's building at 50 Robinson St., but haven't been able to figure out who. They suspect it got into the tub through the drain.
Officers called the local SPCA to have the reptile removed.
Outaouais SPCA staffer Vanessa Berthiaume said in 10 years she's never seen a case like this and expects the reason they still haven't heard from the snake's owner is the pet was unwanted.
"Sometimes people flush them," she said. "But this one didn't want to go that way."
The snake is a royal python and can grow to more than six feet long. It is, however, a popular pet.
"They're the kindest," Berthiaume said, adding if the owner doesn't come forward another staffer, Caroline Jacques, already has dibs on the snake.
They're not sure if the non-venomous snake is a boy or a girl.
Police said owners of pythons are required by law to keep them in a terrarium.
