A long-term toxicology study on pigs fed a combined genetically modified (GM) soy and GM maize diet

摘要(Abstract):
The GM diet was associated with gastric and uterine differences in pigs. GM-fed pigs had uteri that were 25% heavier than non-GM fed pigs (p=0.025). GM-fed pigs had a higher rate of severe stomach inflammation with a rate of 32% of GM-fed pigs compared to 12% of non-GM-fed pigs (p=0.004). The severe stomach inflammation was worse in GM-fed males compared to non-GM fed males by a factor of 4.0 (p=0.041), and GM-fed females compared to non-GM fed females by a factor of 2.2 (p=0.034).

结论(Conclusion):
Pigs fed a GMO diet exhibited heavier uteri and a higher rate of severe stomach inflammation than pigs fed a comparable non-GMO diet. Given the widespread use of GMO feed for livestock as well as humans this is a cause for concern. The results indicate that it would be prudent for GM crops that are destined for human food and animal feed, including stacked GM crops, to undergo long-term animal feeding studies preferably before commercial planting, particularly for toxicological and reproductive effects. Humans have a similar gastrointestinal tract to pigs, and these GM crops are widely consumed by people, particularly in the USA, so it would be be prudent to determine if the findings of this study are applicable to humans.

“We have seen an exponential increase in the number of enrollments,” Ms. Westgate said.

Additionally, the livestock industry is increasing its demand for non-G.M.O. crops to meet growing demand among consumers for eggs and meats sourced from animals that have never eaten genetically modified feeds.

看了 paper, 一點想法:

(1) 玉米選擇方面.
控制組的轉基因玉米: 選擇的不是實驗組玉米的 parent (加入抗蟲抗藥基因以前),
而是其他市面上能買到的其他玉米. 理由是 parent 市面上買不到或本身已經是轉基因玉米.
這樣的麻煩是不知道實驗看出的差異究竟是因為加入的基因 (1-3 個基因),
還是本身就不同品種的玉米 (不清楚有多少基因不同).

(2) 子宮
一共比較了八個器官, 其他心肝脾肺腎等大小相當.
子宮部份的不同的確有統計上的意義.

(3) 胃炎
胃炎拆成了三種, 輕度胃炎, 中度胃炎, 重度胃炎.
數據簡化如下:

轉基因 沒有胃炎 8 頭豬
轉基因 輕度胃炎 23 頭豬
轉基因 中度胃炎 18 頭豬
轉基因 重度胃炎 23 頭豬

非轉基因 沒有胃炎 4 頭豬
非轉基因 輕度胃炎 31 頭豬
非轉基因 中度胃炎 29 頭豬
非轉基因 重度胃炎 9 頭豬

奇怪的是兩種豬得了胃炎的機率都很高. 有新聞性.
如果只看得不得胃炎:
轉基因 沒有胃炎 8 頭豬, 有胃炎 64 頭豬
非轉基因 沒有胃炎 4 頭豬, 有胃炎 69 頭豬
就沒什麼差別.
