Ottawa

Ottawa Police remind residents to protect their valuables

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Police Service has identified a recent increase in thefts from vehicles in Kanata South, in particular the neighbourhood of Bridlewood mainly in the Bridlewood north area. No forced entry is common. Typical stolen property have included Global Positioning Devices (GPS), smart phones, ipods, sunglasses, wallets, loose cash, and other valuables.

West District Inspector Michael Rice stated that twenty-eight (28) reported incidents in such a short period of time in this area underscores the need for residents to take responsibility by protecting their property, locking vehicles and removing valuables as the first and best response to eliminating these crimes of opportunity that occur throughout Ottawa:
  • Don't leave personal identification, vehicle registration or insurance certificates, or credit cards in your vehicle.
  • Remove valuables and shopping bags from view. This includes loose change and electronic devices.
  • Never leave your vehicle running and unattended.
  • Always close windows securely and lock the doors.
  • Never leave your car keys, house keys, or garage door opener in your vehicle.
  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • Park your vehicle facing the street.
  • Consider motion detector lights on the outside of your house.
  • Report incidents to the Ottawa Police Telephone Reporting Centre (613-236-1222, ext. 7300).
We invite the public to contact their local Community Police Centre for further crime prevention tips. Location and contact information can be found at ottawapolice.ca or through the police non-emergency phone number 613-236-1222.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to contact the Ottawa Police Service at 613-236-1222, ext. 7300, or Crime Stoppers as 613-233-8477 or toll free at 1-800-22-8477.
