Forest fires in Quebec prompt air quality warning for Ottawa

Authorities warn elevated levels of smog in Ottawa and surrounding regions, including Cornwall and as far away as Maine pose a health risk as smoke from wildfires in north Quebec hit the area.
More than a dozen forest fires are burning in northern Quebec and even the Maine Department of Environmental Protection has issued a limited health notice.
People with heart and lung conditions are most affected by air pollution and are being asked to monitor their health and go indoors if they experience symptoms such as coughing and throat irritation. To preempt symptoms those at risk are asked to reschedule or reduce any strenuous outdoor activities.
In central and downtown Ottawa the Ontario air quality index shows particles 2.5 microns or less in diameter in the air, which are known to cause the most serious health effects. Those with asthma, cardiovascular or lung disease, as well as children and elderly people, are considered most at risk.
More smoke could accumulate Wednesday as a weather system approaching Maine may push the smoke back toward Canada.
