US Approves Non-GMO Label for Select Foods

26th June 2013

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved a label for meat and liquid egg products to indicate the absence of genetically modified organism (GMO) products. This unprecedented move represents the first time the department has approved a non-GMO label claim.

The label will demonstrate to the consumer that the animals have not eaten feed containing GMO ingredients, such as corn, alfalfa, and soy - three popular GMO feeds for livestock. The initiative came from a non-profit organisation, “Non-GMO Project”, which seeks to offer third party verification and labelling for non-GMO foods and products to increase transparency between food producers and consumers.

The approval does not signal any new policy on biotechnology products - as of now, there is no federal requirement for labels to appear if there is a GMO presence in the food. However, it does suggest a trend is emerging on GMO labelling, as an increasing number of US food producers are voluntarily opting to signal the absence or presence of GMO products. The US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) maintains that GMO foods are as safe as conventional foods.

The USDA had to check the standards of the proposed label before authorising its use, but it has set a precedent for other meat and poultry companies to start labelling their meat this way.

我感觉就像把处女的标签贴在脑门上一样可笑。

Great news for health-sensitive people-finally we have something equivalent to the European requirements.
The question is, when will it be put into effect? And when will Canada follow the example?

当遍地都是妓女在冒充纯情的时候,帖这么个标签也未必可笑。
