BlackBerry has laid off 250 employees at its new-product testing facility, the research and development area of the Waterloo, Ont.-based smartphone maker.
The workers there are responsible for supporting the smartphone maker's manufacturing and R&D departments.
Employees were given notice on Tuesday, according to a statement sent by e-mail to CBC News from company spokeswoman Lisette Kwong.
"This is part of the next stage of our turnaround plan to increase efficiencies and scale our company correctly for new opportunities in mobile computing," she wrote Thursday. "We will be as transparent as possible as those plans evolve."
BlackBerry is trying to regain its footing in a highly competitive global smartphone market, going head-to-head against technology giants such as Apple and Samsung.
BlackBerry's new Z10 smartphone and operating system made their debut in the U.S. market in March, but analysts were underwhelmed by sales of the new touchscreen phone.

作为一个BB粉，长期使用playbook和bb手机的我现在对这个公司彻底失去了信心，1、公司高层言而无信（BB10发布会说会给playbook升级，结果变卦了）；2、市场战略完全失败 （考虑欧美，不进军中国，进军什么啊3，你进军阿三我还支持个屁）；3、产品跟新如蜗牛（两年才出个10， 11出来的时候还有没有BB?） 4、骄傲自大，价格定位高。 5、产品质量函待提高（前几天playbook从床边掉地毯上，照相机功能就没了，自由落体的高度只有几十厘米。原准备砸核桃的计划只好取消了）
