Manitoba Liberal Sen. Zimmer retires over health concerns

OTTAWA - Manitoba Liberal Sen. Rod Zimmer stepped down Friday from the Red Chamber, reportedly over health concerns.
Senate spokeswoman Annie Joannette confirmed Tuesday in an email that Senate speaker Noel Kinsella received a letter from Governor General David Johnston's office advising him of the resignation, effective 5 p.m. Aug. 2.
The 70-year-old senator was appointed to the upper chamber in 2005 by former prime minister Paul Martin.
Zimmer successfully fought throat cancer after being diagnosed in 2003. He is reported to have struggled with respiratory ailments throughout this year.
Prior to being named to the Senate, Zimmer was a longtime Liberal fundraiser and an executive with the Manitoba Lotteries Foundation and CanWest Corp.
Sen. Zimmer and his wife, Maygan Sensenberger, 23, made headlines last year following a domestic spat on a flight between Ottawa and Saskatoon.
She pleaded guilty in September to causing a disturbance on a plane and received a one-year suspended sentence.
