It was $693 this morning. And now it is about $728 from New York to Beijing via Toronto Air Canada. If I could leave from Toronto not NEw York, I would buy the ticket. I will find out.

Do not think so. If you do not go from NYC but directly from Toronto, they may not let you boarding. On the way back, it may be ok, namely, you can get out from Toronto. The intention of Air Canada is to attract more customers from NYC.
