OTTAWA — Canada’s one-percenters now earn at least $191,000 per year, before tax, according to newly released data from Statistics Canada’s 2011 National Household Survey.
In that year, entry into Canada’s exclusive top one per cent of earners required making at least $191,100 — an amount seven times greater than the national median income of $29,900.
The survey, examining data from 2010, provides a detailed look at characteristics of Canada’s top earners, including where they live, what they studied and their fields of work.
But the average income among the country’s elite earners is much higher. The top one percent earned an average of $381,000, more than 13 times the average income of Canada’s bottom 90%, who earned just $28,000. That number is also triple the average income of the country’s top 10% of earners ($134,900).

Nearly all others possessed some form of certificate of diploma; only three per cent of Canada’s one-percenters have no certificate, diploma or degree. But that small segment of the one per cent is actually earning more money, on average, than their better-educated one-percenter counterparts.
The average income for those in the top one per cent with no high school diploma was $405,100, compared to $387,800 for those with university degrees.
