that's Shanghai

只不过是个了解上海的网站,看看内容就可以了,不必要去BBS吧。再者,我也从没进过它们的BBS.

内容可能很好,就是不太容易找。网站有待于提高。

You cannot really understand a city and the people there until you live there for a long time. Website might be a help, yet far less informative.

Never judge a person on the basis of where he or she comes from, and never judge a city which you donnot understand.

Yes, I agree. That website is just for the information of what is lately happening in shanghai and the history of Shanghai, which may provide a very good backgroud of understanding Shanghai.

When I look at the city, I see three periods:

Shanghai used to be an melt pot, gathering people from other parts of China. That was the main reason I think SH used to develop very fast... (we see the similar story in Shenzhen, a immigrating city is always full of venture spirit, creative ideas and energy)

Decades ago, Shanghai tightened its 'HUKOU' policy, since then it became very hard for people from other provinces to get in. Shanghainese became more and more proud because first SH was the richest city and second, Shanghai HUKOU was strictly restricted.

Recently, things have changed a lot. Shanghai nowadays opens her arms again to welcome interllectuals from all around the world. Forget about HUKOU, fewer and fewer people care; forget about the rich, you could be rich anywhere not necessarily in Shenzhen, in Shanghai, in Beijing or in USA.

I guess people have bad feelings against Shanghainese mostly come from their memory during childhood and young ages, time accords with the second period of the development of the city.

I am glad to see the change of Shanghai, and Shanghainese definitely changes too. Although I come from Shenzhen, I support Shanghai to compete with Hong Kong and become the most charming city in Asia.

Expecting the NEW Eastern Pearl...

If those who have bad feeling of Shanghai can really go to Shanghai now, I believe they will change their mind. In Shanghai, no more people will say "Xiang Xia Ren" to those people from outside Shanghai. People are proud of speaking Mandarin instead of Shanghai dialect. And Shanghai has already open her arm to welcome all the people and ready to prepare for a brighter future with all the efforts from all the people living in China.
