Ottawa’s big freeze outchills the South Pole

OTTAWA — Thinking of heading south to escape the cold? It’s a good idea — no matter how far south you go.
When Ottawa was bracing against a bone-chilling -27 C Thursday morning, the temperature at the South Pole, where it is already Friday, was a balmy -23 C.
Overnight, the temperature will fall to -26 C at the South Pole, just a shade below Ottawa’s predicted -25 C.
It’s the height of summer in Antarctica, but even so, the warm spell isn’t expected to last. The weekend outlook is for temperatures to drop to -29 C with overnight lows of -40 C. By Sunday, the high in Ottawa should be back to near the freezing mark.
