Gas to soar above $1.40 a litre; Iraq unrest blamed for record high

Gas prices in Ottawa are expected to jump by more than two cents to an average of $1.409 cents per litre, a record high, according to En-Pro, an Oshawa-based energy consultant.

The rise in prices is due to speculation on Wall Street that civil unrest in Iraq will spread further south into the major-oil producing regions and affect crude oil supply to Europe and Asia, said Roger McKnight, the company’s chief petroleum analyst.

“It’s the highest we’ve ever seen, even going back to the (Hurricane) Katrina days of many years ago when the refinery system in the Gulf of Mexico basically shut down,” McKnight said. “Things have never been this high, these are absolutely record highs.”

He added that the transportation sector will also be watching the jump in gas prices closely.

The website ottawagasprices.com listed the average gas price in Ottawa at $1.379 and rising on Friday morning.
