Uber driver says it's a great job

TORONTO - Esther Nerling is dressed to impress and has a smile that could certainly win you over.

She also has a bedazzled candy box full of sweets that she offers to her riders.

“They love it when they get inside and see there is candy, especially late at night,” said the 59-year-old, semi-retired, widow.

It would be hard to say no to a ride from her.

In Toronto — and other major cities — taxi culture has received a major facelift since Uber, the popular ride service app, has come to town. And Nerling is one of many who are redefining their retirement, and their lives, by hopping on the bandwagon and becoming Uber driving partners.

“I have such a blast. And I have so much freedom. I can work when I want to work. It’s great.”

Nerling works only part time as a driver and said on average she makes about $22 an hour, clearing $600 each week in extra income, she said. She has recently helped put a daughter through school and largely credits her new gig for her ability to do things like that.

“I want to enjoy this part of my life,” Nerling said. “This is the perfect job for me because I can go on vacation when I want, I can turn it on and off ( the app) when I want. I’ve had a career and I don’t want that (now).”

Ride sharing is the latest trend in a growing economy that both consumers and keen money-makers — often retirees — are taking part in. Uber essentially hooks riders up with drivers who are in the area by searching the app and viewing driver profiles and ratings. All participants are registered on the app — riders using a credit card — and there is no anonymity or payments made through cash.

“Nobody is a stranger and it’s a risk-free transaction,” Nerling said, adding she has never felt unsafe while driving. “I’m always being tracked by the app and there is zero tolerance for bad behaviour.”

According to Forbes, Uber is valued at more than $1 billion and could soon make a splash on the stock market.

They offer what today’s millennial generation is looking for: It’s hip, it’s easy, it’s digital and it’s instant.

“All the (riders) have to do is push a button to see exactly how long it will take me to get there and they can track my route and see me coming towards them,” explained Nerling.

Drivers are required to own a four-door car that is newer than 10 years old; pass a background check and driving history check, and have insurance and a valid driver’s licence.

For Nerling, this has been one of her greatest opportunities.

“It’s great,” she said. “Who wouldn’t want to do this?”

Uber
