WILNO, Ont. — A man has been arrested after three women were shot dead in eastern Ontario Tuesday afternoon.

A shooting in a small eastern Ontario community Tuesday morning triggered a manhunt that ended hours later with the arrest of a man police consider a suspect in the deaths of three women.

The 57-year-old man — who authorities have not named pending charges, but sources identified to the Ottawa Citizen as Basil Borutski, 57 — was arrested by police in Ottawa hours after officers were first called to a home in Wilno, Ont., some 130 kilometres west of the country’s capital.

Police had initially said the man was being sought in connection with one fatal shooting.

Later in the day, however, police provided details on how events had unfolded.

They said officers were called to a location in Wilno, Ont., just before 9 a.m. and found the body of Anastasia Kuzyk. As a result of information they received, they then went to another home in the community and found the body of a second woman.

Sources have identified the second victim as Nathalie Warmerdam.

Shortly after 11:10 a.m., police say they found a third woman dead at a home about half an hour away from Wilno.

Several businesses and schools in Wilno were placed on lockdown while the search for the suspect was underway. Extra security measures were also taken on and around Parliament Hill in Ottawa, as police announced the suspect may have headed to the city.

The man was arrested around 2:30 p.m. in the community of Kinburn, in western Ottawa.

Sgt. Kristine Rae of the Bancroft detachment of the OPP thanked the public and Ottawa police for their assistance in the case.

“Events like this are not very common and it just shows the teamwork between police services,” she said. “It took a lot of teamwork, a lot of officers and investigators. We’re just happy that the suspect has been apprehended.”

The day’s events left residents of the small town of about 300 people in shock.

“This is slaughter,” Carl Bromwich, a councillor for the township said of the three deaths being investigated by police. “This is the most unnerving thing that’s happened here in years.”

Bromwich said he spoke to a Wilno resident who told him she had seen a man thought to be the suspect earlier on Tuesday.

“She said, ’oh my god, I saw that man running down the road with a gun,”’ Bromwich said.

In Wilno, residents expressed relief that the suspect was in custody, recalling a flurry of police activity in the town earlier in the day.

Sara Burchat was home alone when police advised her that there was a male suspect on the loose near her property. Burchat said her husband was trying to return to be with her, but had been kept away by road closures as the police investigated the scene.

“The cop was on the other end of the phone saying, ’you either hide or get out.’ So I had to leave,” Burchat said from the local tavern.
Corinne Higgins, owner of the Wilno Tavern Restaurant said it had been a very stressful day.

“It was a very scary situation to think that somebody was armed in our community,” she said. “Knowing that the person has been arrested, it’s a relief.

A 57-year-old man arrested Tuesday after a woman was found dead near the community of Wilno, Ont., is now a suspect in two other homicides, provincial police say.

Basil Borutski was arrested at around 2:30 p.m. on Kinburn Side Road in Ottawa.

Borutski has a criminal record and had recently been released from prison, according to police sources.

Police responded to an incident in Wilno, about 180 kilometres west of Ottawa between Barry's Bay and Killaloe, just before 9 a.m. ET on Szczipior Road, Ontario Provincial Police said.

Upon arrival, police found a dead woman. Neighbours of the victim identified her as Anastasia Kuzyk, a local Century 21 realtor.

On Tuesday afternoon, police confirmed they also found a second woman dead at a residence on Foymount Road in nearby Foymount.

At around 11:10 a.m., OPP officers responded to a residence on Kamaniskeg Lake Road in Bancroft, and found a third woman dead.

Police said one of the victims is a family member of the suspect.

The suspect in the slayings was arrested near Kinburn at around 2:30 p.m., police said.

Before an arrest was made, residents in affected communities were told to keep their doors and windows locked and stay inside.

Schools, courthouses and other sites in the affected communities were locked down as a precaution.

All lockdowns have now been lifted, OPP said.

"Everyone's been told they can get back to their daily lives, as much as they can after an incident like this," said Insp. John McGettrick with the Ottawa Police Service.

What began as a manhunt for an armed man wanted in connection with a shooting death Tuesday morning in Wilno, ON has turned into a triple homicide investigation.

Ontario Provincial Police now say they've linked the deaths of three women to the 57-year-old suspect wanted in the Wilno shooting.

The man was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Kinburn, by members of the Ottawa Police Tactical Unit.

"Between noon and 12:30 we received information from the OPP of a male subject who was wanted by them in relation to up to three homicides in their area, who could potentially have fled into the West Carleton area," Duty Insp. John McGetrick told CFRA. "The male subject was tracked into the Beck's Side Road/Kinburn Side Road area and around 2:30 was arrested in a wooded area by tactical members without any incident."

Police sources told Newstalk 580 CFRA they tracked the man to an area near the Kinburn Community Centre by triangulating his cell phone signal.

Police launched their hours long manhunt for the armed man in the Valley Tuesday morning, following the discovery of a woman's body in a home on Szczipior Road in Wilno, which is in between Killaloe and Barry's Bay.

Neighbours identify the victim as realtor Anastasia Kuzyk.

That investigation then led police to a second scene on Foymont Road, where a second woman's body was discovered. The OPP Emergency Response Team and the tactical and rescue units, along with an OPP helicopter were on scene as they searched for an armed suspect. Residents in the area were warned to lock their doors and stay inside.

At around 11:10 a.m. Bancroft OPP discovered a third woman's body on Kamaniskeg Lake Road.

Barb Johnston lives on Foymont Road and told CTV Ottawa this morning she heard police sirens and then a gunshot from her neighbour's house.

"I heard sirens going by, but they seemed to stop right after they got to our house and I thought they just turned off the sirens," she said. "My husband said 'well there's three police cars outside here' and he said he saw one police going down on his knees and then about five minutes after that I heard a gunshot."

"It was a rifle shot, but it wasn't like sharp," she said. "It was more muffled."

The incidents triggered a number of lock downs, including one at the Pembroke courthouse and another at Langevin Morris Smith LLP's office here in Ottawa.

Extra security was also brought in to Parliament Hill and the Elgin Street Courthouse.

All lock downs have been lifted.

Charges have yet to be laid.
