Ottawa pianist Haoyao Mai, 13, earns top Royal Conservatory prize
Thirteen-year-old Haoyao Mai has claimed a gold medal from The Royal Conservatory of Music for earning the top mark in Ontario and Quebec on the level four piano examination. Mai was awarded the medal Sunday at a ceremony in Toronto at The Royal Conservatory's Koerner Hall.
The young pianist performed three pieces as well as a variety of technical exercises to test memory, sight reading and her ear for music. The standardized Royal Conservatory examination measures progress and mastery of classical music skills.
Mai's took the exam back in April. She is one of six Ontario residents to earn gold medals during the 2014-15 academic year.
Mai is taught by Rebecca Wang, who lives in Kanata.
The Royal Conservatory conducts examinations at more than 200 locations across Canada, four times a year, including three locations in the Ottawa area. More than 40,000 exams were conducted last year in Ontario.
