Ottawa police turned out in force – an inspector, a sergeant and two constables – to reassure Blackburn Hamlet residence that their neighbourhood was safe regardless of a recent shooting incident in the area.

“Blackburn Hamlet is a safe area,” Const. Brad Burleau, a community policing officer with a decade’s experience in patrolling the locale, told some 40 people who turned out at the local community centre Thursday evening to discuss safety and policing concerns.

Earlier Thursday, police said they’d arrested three people following a Jan. 15 incident in which a man asleep inside his home with his family, including children, had been wounded in the leg after a number of shots were fired at a house on Innes Road, near Bearbrook Road. Two people, a 46-year-old woman, Christine Miner, and a young offender have been charged with various firearm-related offences.

At the community meeting later, Insp. Chris Renwick characterized the shooting as a rarity for the area. Attendees also heard the victim had no connection with the shooter. It seems the shooter, neither of whom live in the area, had targeted the wrong house.

Burleau provided statistics to emphasize how Blackburn Hamlet can be considered a comparatively safe area for residents. Violent crimes are a rarity, he said, noting that since 2012 there have been two shootings int eh community, including the most recent.

In the last three years, police have responded to 472 calls for service. Of those, about 80 involved such things as mischief complaints, particularly for graffiti. Of the other 390 calls, most involved drugs, robberies, assaults, and burglaries.

If there is a problem area, Burleau said, it is the doubling of mischief and break-and-enters in the last year.

Another officer, Sgt. Brad Hampson, explained that police want to be pro-active in responding to crime in the area, but need the community’s help. Residents, he said, should not hesitate to call police if they see anything that strikes them as suspicious.

“Get involved, call the police,” he said. “It’s one of the best things you can do (to keep crime in check).”

Others echoed the sentiment. “This (the shooting) is one of those things that happen,” said local Coun. Jody Mitic, “(but) we’re a very low crime-rate area. The more we look out for each other the better off we’ll be.”

Laura Dudas, president of the Blackburn Hamlet Community Assoc., likewise observed that the hamlet overall is one of the safest areas in the city. One purpose of the meeting – besides addressing residents’ concerns about the shooting – was to ensure it stays that way by getting people involved in such things as Neighbourhood Watch programs.

“It is a safe community but people need to be involved to keep it that way,” she said. “If you see something, say something.”
