It was hot, hot, hot for Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend but that didn’t stop a whopping 46,940 runners from hitting the pavement.
Temperatures soared into the mid-30s, making conditions tough for those who left the the starting line.
“With the temperature, I only had one goal: to survive,” said Julie Charest, a runner from Montreal who tackled the 21-kilometre half-marathon distance for the first time.
Race organizers even had to change start times for the half-marathon and 10K, as well as cut the full marathon short for late-finishing runners because of high heat and humidity.
“I was a bit worried,” Charest said. “I didn’t want to risk my life for a run.”
The high heat and humidity meant that the medical tent saw a “higher than normal” number of people come through on Saturday night after the 5K but there wasn’t as much traffic on Sunday.
The medical staff at Race Weekend usually see about 250 people in total, said Jon Hooper, Run Ottawa’s medical director, but he estimated the number was down this year.
Race staff gave a huge shout out to the city’s residents who showered runners with water and provided something refreshing to drink along the courses.
The combination of rain, cloud cover, early starts, sprinklers and people listening to medical advice reduced the number of visits Hooper had predicted. “Thank you, Mother Nature,” he said.
“It was surprisingly cool with the overcast conditions (on Sunday) morning,” said John Halvorsen the chair of Run Ottawa, “and it looked like the runners were taking it a little easier, and that certainly helped.”
Only three runners were hospitalized over the weekend for heat-related illness, according to Hooper.
“It was really phenomenal.” he said. “People were a lot smarter out there, so I tip my hat to all the runners.”
