To mark Canada’s sesquicentennial, the Citizen’s Bruce Deachman met and photographed 150 people in the Ottawa area, encouraging them to tell their stories that, combined, painted an intimate portrait of the region and the people who live, work and play here. The series, which was published daily leading up to Canada Day, was called Capital Voices. It continues on a somewhat less rigorously defined schedule.
“We’re showing sheep today. This is my first year showing sheep; last year I was going to show a cow, but it didn’t really work out. She got a bit crazy in the last few days and we couldn’t show her.
“So this is Robin. She’s a Hampshire — black face, black legs and a beige-ish white body. She was born in April.
“The first thing you need is a halter; you start with that and you walk her around and get her used to walking with you, and while she’s getting used to that, you start taking her off the halter and holding her around the neck and getting her comfortable with that, because that’s how you show her.
“So then you get her here and wash her off with soap and water and get her all dry, and then you get what’s called a card — a brush that makes her all fluffy — and then you get scissors and trim her to make sure all her fluffiness is even. And that’s pretty much it.”
So is it like a dog show? Do you get in a ring and run around with her?
“Yes, pretty much. But you have to stop and get her legs all squared up, and the judges judge you on that.”
What else are the judges looking for?
“Mostly that her legs are all squared up and you have it in control.”
So is a docile sheep a good thing?
“Yeah.”
Do you live on a farm?
“Half time. My mom lives in Kanata and my dad lives on a farm, on Fallowfield. It’s my grandparents’ farm — Al and Elaine Wilson. They helped me a lot with this.”
Do you have a specific goal today?
“Not really. Just have fun.”
How long have you been planning this, and how much time does it take?
“Since about March, before she was born. It takes about an hour or two, four times a week. It’s really fun. You just get to spend time with your pet more, and I love doing that.”
Will she always be a pet?
“Yeah.”
She’ll never be on a plate?
“No.”
