The ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa organized by Dominion Command of the Royal Canadian Legion is an Ottawa tradition to honour veterans and those who fell in service of Canada.
While there are events organized by branches across the city, tens of thousands come to the National War Memorial at the intersection of Elgin and Wellington streets.
Arrive early Saturday to get a good view although large screens are set up around the memorial to broadcast the ceremony, organizers say. Road closures around the memorial start at 7 a.m.
Can’t make it? The ceremony will also be broadcast live from 10:15 a.m. to noon on the Legion’s Facebook Live stream (www.facebook.com/CanadianLegion)
The schedule of events, via the Royal Canadian Legion:
8:00- 10:00 a.m. – the Legion’s Virtual Wall of Honour and Remembrance will be displayed on these jumbo screens. Canadians have been “building” this virtual wall of photographs of veterans who have now died.
10:20 a.m – Marching contingents arrive at the memorial
10:35 a.m. – Veterans Parade and dignitaries arrive at the memorial
10:57 a.m. – O Canada, Last Post
11:00 a.m – Two minutes of silence, Lament, Rouse, Act of Remembrance, 21-gun salute, prayers, placing of wreaths, Benediction
11:30 a.m. – God Save the Queen, march off
Noon – Ceremony concludes
For veterans:
All veterans are welcome to join the Veterans Parade, the Legion says. They can gather at the Adam Room at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier starting at 8 a.m. or form up on Wellington Street at Elgin Street by 10:10 a.m. The parade steps off at 10:30 a.m. en route to the National War Memorial.
Veterans who wear their medals or uniforms ride free on OC Transpo, Para Transpo and Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO).
Vehicles with a veteran’s licence plate will be allowed to park for free in the parking garage at City Hall, 110 Laurier Avenue West, and in on-street paid areas around the National War Memorial bordered by and including Somerset Street to the south, Bank Street to the west, the Ottawa River to the north and the Rideau Canal to the east. All other on-street parking regulations continue to apply.
Open and closed:
OC Transpo buses will run on a regular Saturday schedule but will pull over to the side of the road, if it is safe to do so, to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. The Last Post and Reveille will be played over the radios of OC Transpo buses. Drivers may also wear red on November 11 in support of Canadian Forces troops.
In accordance with city bylaws, most retail businesses must be closed until 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 11.
Pools, arenas and community centres are open but Ottawa Public Library branches will be closed, returning to their regular schedule Sunday.
City services are closed Monday, Nov. 13, but the city’s 3-1-1 Contact Centre will be open for “urgent matters.”
Waste collection will happen on the regularly-scheduled day.
