It was Friday when Jill Woods got a phone call: Please come and pick up 100-plus abandoned finches and some canaries for good measure.

Woods runs Feathered Haven Parrot Rescue in Smiths Falls, and takes in unwanted birds, but usually one at a time: A parrot here, a macaw there.

But in Ottawa, a woman had been evicted after a foreclosure. She was locked out while her birds were locked in, a flock that had multiplied beyond the woman’s ability to care for them or keep the home clean.

“Probably they got ahead of her,” Woods said. “Finches are very prolific. I’ve seen them lay eggs in their food bowls.”

Jill Woods tried to find someone else to take the birds, but couldn’t. So on Sunday she led an impromptu band of volunteers with some 30 cages to bring the stressed and dehydrated birds to safety.

First they had to catch them.

“There were 70-plus flying around the house,” Woods said. “We put up blankets and we used some nets, and then if we could corral them with the blankets of course we could get them with our hands.” Finches have soft bills and don’t hurt people if they nip a little.

Two of the birds later died, but 107 are still alive.

The birds are in quarantine for now until a vet can check them for infectious diseases. Once they are cleared, Woods wants to give them away to good homes, though she would also be grateful for donations as her non-profit rescue group is paying to move and house the birds — and to cover the vet’s bill.

There’s a Facebook page set up for people interested in contacting Feathered Haven to take some birds, and for donations.

Some of the more than 100 finches rescued from a foreclosed home over the weekend.

These are zebra finches, striped songbirds with orange cheeks and red beaks widely sold as pets. They are social, they like toys such as swings and bells, and they like to fly around your home. They can be trained to sit on a person’s hand.

“They eat finch seed. They actually eat vegetables. We shave broccoli for them, we shave carrot up, and they like berries.”

Finches can live as long as 20 years, but 10 would be a more likely lifespan, she said. The catch is that no one knows how old these birds are.
