More fundamentally, it declined because it failed to achieve its central objective – the overthrow of Republican state governments in the South."

一个大背景是美国内战时期以林肯总统为代表的共和党的政治主张就是解放黑奴。而民主党是坚持黑奴制度的南方联盟派的政治主心骨。战后军事上获胜的共和党主导开始南方的和解与重建过程，在南方各州立即实行了完全开放的民主选举，使民主党政治势力得以保存。而kkk实际上是民主党中的激进分子企图用地下军事恐怖手段延缓黑奴解放, 维系黑奴制度的一个努力。

Jefferson Davis (born Jefferson Finis Davis;[1] June 3, 1808 – December 6, 1889) was an American politician who served as the only President of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1865. He was a member of the Democratic Party who represented Mississippi in the United States Senate and the House of Representatives prior to becoming president of the Confederacy. He was the 23rd United States Secretary of War, serving under U.S. President Franklin Pierce from 1853 to 1857.
