Gatineau residents will be expected to reduce the amount of their bi-weekly waste disposal to 120 litres starting July 15.

On Tuesday night, Gatineau city council approved new rules to the municipal collection service with the intent of banning large volumes of compost and recyclable materials that make their way into the trash.

The city plans to fine households that exceed the 120-litre limit.

Apartment dwellers will also be encouraged to begin composting. The city plans on visiting apartment units and assessing the number of bins and containers needed, as well as a location for them.

The city will be providing households with new 120-litre bins by July 15 and setting up an on-call system to collect large items like furniture and construction waste. Beginning in October, residents will also have four days throughout the year to throw their large items to the curb for collection.

Around 17,000 tonnes of compostable materials end up in the dump each year, said the city.

The province has required that Gatineau reduce the waste sent to its dump by 45 per cent of its 2016 volume by 2020.

Kenneth Gallagher, whose mother lives in Gatineau, said the waste disposal change could cause problems with apartments and condos, since “many landlords do not have composting options available.”

“They will have recycle bins and garbage bins, but not composting,” said Gallagher. “So, if you don’t have a backyard or other places to store the compostable waste, you may end up being stuck.”

Ottawa’s current garbage limits allow residential dwellings up to six approved containers of garbage.
