What it is: Cardiac death (or circulatory death) refers to the irreversible loss of function of the heart and lungs.

How does organ donation after circulatory death work? In Ontario, patients who meet the criteria for donation after cardiac death are critically ill and dependent on mechanical ventilation. Donation is a possibility for families who have decided to withdraw life support after receiving a diagnosis that there is no long-term prognosis for recovery of their loved one.

What are the limitations? When the patient’s heart stops beating, the organs are recovered. But, because it can take some time for a donor’s heart to stop after life-sustaining equipment is withdrawn, the organs may be deprived of oxygen, with some organs degrading more quickly than other.

What does that mean? There is a strict window for organ retrieval after circulatory death and organs must be assessed to determine whether they are viable for transplant.
