An Ottawa man is facing five charges for failing to carry out his duties under bankruptcy legislation as an officer with a now-insolvent telecom company.

Anthony Melhem, 40, was scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice Tuesday on charges under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.

It’s alleged that as an officer with the now-bankrupt World Affinity Telecom Inc., Melhem failed to satisfy requirements for the orderly resolution of its business affairs.

He’s been charged by the integrated bankruptcy enforcement unit made up of the RCMP and the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy (OSB).

The unit has charged 54 people with 186 offences under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and 137 offences under the Criminal Code for liabilities totalling about $111 million since 2014.

Offenders are turned up by OSB detection programs or complaints from creditors, trustees or the public, the RCMP said.
