It’s National Volunteer Week. Today we salute Rashma and Kiran Horra, who have volunteered at every Doors Open Ottawa event since 2002.

Each year, Doors Open Ottawa requires volunteers at many buildings to organize visitors and distribute information. Over the years, Rashma and Kiran have led tours at sites in every corner of the City. From Watson’s Mill in Manotick to the Royal Canadian Mint downtown, to the Cumberland Village Heritage Museum. Not to mention the embassies of Algeria, Armenia, Liberia and the British High Commission. The list goes on and on.

For the Horras, volunteering is a way of giving back to the community that they call home. But, they get something out of it, too.

“Of course we are giving back to the community, but we are also learning so many interesting things,” says Rashma. “We get first hand knowledge of what is open to the public and what is not. Sometimes we get to see things other visitors cannot.”

For anyone wondering if volunteering is for them, Rashma says Doors Open Ottawa is an ideal place to start.

“You have to give it a try at least once,” she says. “It is only one weekend. I can assure you will get addicted to it. You’re going to like it and you are going to come back again and again.”
