The Ugandan High Commission could soon have a new home at 231 Cobourg Street after the Planning Committee today approved an application to demolish the existing building and a zoning amendment to permit construction of a replacement building.

Due to unstable soil conditions, the existing house has experienced severe cracking and uneven settlement. The building is in the Wilbrod Laurier Heritage Conservation District, and the City would normally recommend against demolishing a building that contributes to the district’s heritage. In this instance, however, the Committee agreed with City heritage staff that the significant costs to restore the building outweigh its heritage value.

The High Commission’s architect has worked with the City to ensure the replacement building’s design is in line with heritage district policies and that it echoes the memory of the current building.

The Committee also approved an amendment to the South Nepean Urban Area Secondary Plan to allow residential development on lands currently designated for commercial recreation. The proposal would significantly increase the urban area available for development, without expanding the urban boundary.

The South Nepean item will go to Council on Wednesday, April 25. All other items approved at today’s Planning Committee meeting will go to Council on Wednesday, May 9.
