A Canada goose has picked an unlikely, and potentially dangerous, spot to nest: A grassy strip next to screaming Queensway traffic.

The mother was sitting atop a nest of eggs next to the eastbound lanes just before the Woodroffe Avenue exit during Wednesday’s morning commute when a Citizen intern snapped this picture.

Safe Wings Ottawa has been fielding concerned calls about the animal, volunteer Anouk Hoedeman said. Some callers have reported seeing both the male and the female and fear for the pair and their goslings’ safety.

But it’s a “tricky situation” where the best bet is likely to let them be, Hoedeman said.

It’s dangerous to disturb a nest and attempts to capture the birds are more likely to end with them panicking and running into traffic.

After the goslings hatch, the new family will be on the march, heading towards water.

The good news is that they often choose the middle of the night to make their move and they’ll have a route to the water planned out, for example along a stream bed, Hoedeman said. Busy roadways just didn’t factor into their instinct-driven plans.

According to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, Canada geese typically nest in the same area where its parents nested and often use the same nest every year. They usually lay five to seven eggs which the female incubates – while the male, her mate for life, stands guard nearby “always vigilant,” for 25 to 28 days.

After the eggs hatch, the family will walk, sometimes several kilometres, to water. Six to nine weeks later, the family takes flight.
