Ottawa police are reminding residents to make sure their locks are secure from thieves this spring.

As warm weather arrives, the police break and enter unit said it expects an increase to the number of break and enters in garages and sheds across Ottawa.

Residents are advised to keep garage doors closed when they are left unattended, and to properly record information on their valuable belongings, such as the make, model, serial numbers, and any unique identifiers of property that could be stolen.

Residents should also take photos of their possessions, in order to assist investigators who can then publish images of stolen property to social media.

Police ask anyone with information on a break and enter to call the break and enter unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 4533. Anonymous tips can be called in toll-free to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or by using the Ottawa police mobile app.
