An anonymous donor is helping Swim Ottawa establish a scholarship in honour of one of the group’s founder who died in an accident last year.

The $1,000 Tom Anzai Memorial Swimming Scholarship will be awarded each June. It’s for Grade 12 graduates who have been club members for at least three years, represented the club at the regional level or above and show “sportsmanship and leadership” plus a “passion for life-long swimming.”

That summed up Anzai, who founded the Swim Ottawa Club with his wife Marie. He was a well-known figure to youth swimmers and their parents and masters swimmers. He competed and coached at many levels, founded Carleton University’s varsity swim team and events including the Riverkeeper swim across the Ottawa River, among other accomplishments.

“He tirelessly advocated for open and inclusive participation in swimming for both youth and adults in Ottawa in so many ways,” Duncan Stewart, Swim Ottawa club president, wrote in announcing the scholarship.

“The Swim Ottawa board is extremely grateful to an anonymous donor from our own community for helping to fund this scholarship in Tom’s memory,” Stewart added.

Anzai, a 56-year-old father of four, died in December after a fall from his roof.
