A barn fire near Manotick early Saturday evening spread to a nearby house on the same property, but both structures were abandoned, according to Ottawa Fire Services.
Firefighters received calls about heavy smoke and flames coming from a barn on 425 Nicolls Island Rd. around 6:30 p.m. They called in a working fire while driving to the property. Firefighters secured a water source and started dousing the blaze. The fire was under control at 7:12 p.m. Firefighters said the damage to property ended at 7:31 p.m.
No one was injured. The fire department dispatched an investigator to determine the cause.
It’s the second fire in roughly a year on that stretch of Nicolls Island Road. On June 4, 2017, firefighters battled a blaze at an abandoned home on the road near River Road. There was also a fire in a home on River Road, near Nicholls Island Road, on Dec. 14, 2017. There were no injuries reported in those fires.
