Today, Mayor Jim Watson, Rideau-Vanier Councillor Mathieu Fleury and Brian O’Hoski of Cadillac Fairview, owner of CF Rideau Centre, unveiled a plaque that officially names the small section of Nicholas Street, where it intersects with Rideau Street, Ogilvy Square.
Ogilvy Square is named in honour of Charles Ogilvy who opened a department store nearby in 1887 and moved the store to 126 Rideau Street in 1907, where it remained until it closed in 1992. Designated as a heritage property in 2000, the building facade was dis-assembled brick by brick and re-constructed within the scope of the CF Rideau Centre expansion project.
Now closed to vehicular traffic, this pedestrian-focused landscape is both a complement to and a bridge between the newly renovated Arts Court and Ottawa Art Gallery, and the soon-to-be-completed Rideau Street Light Rail Station.
Features of the space include:
Ogilvy Square won an Urban Design Award of Merit in 2017 for Public Spaces and Civic Spaces.
Quotes
“Ogilvy Square is an ideal public space, located in the heart of downtown Ottawa, to support public art, outdoor patios, outdoor performances and art installations. Ogilvy Square will become a landmark in Ottawa’s Art, Fashion and Theatre District, and will be a space that residents and visitors will enjoy for many years to come.”
Jim Watson, Mayor, City of Ottawa
“Today’s event commemorates how the City and the business community are working together to celebrate our City’s history while providing the means for a vibrant and successful future. The space is ideal for outdoor festivals and is part of a vital pedestrian connection between Rideau Street and Laurier Avenue.”
Mathieu Fleury, Councillor, Rideau Vanier
“Through the recently completed redevelopment of CF Rideau Centre, Cadillac Fairview is proud to be able to pay tribute to Ottawa’s architectural heritage, while also creating a vibrant future with a dynamic and welcoming streetscape at Ogilvy Square for this historic part of the city.”
Brian O’Hoski, General Manager, CF Rideau Centre
