An Antonov An-124 Ruslan, one of the largest cargo planes in the world, has been frequenting Ottawa’s airport this week.
Krista Kealey, director of communications for the Ottawa International Airport Authority, said the plane was here all weekend. It leaves Wednesday but returns on Thursday.
“It’s contracted to do some cargo shipments,” Kealey said. “It happens. It’s very cool looking, and has been generating a lot of interest.”
The Antonov is a strategic airlift jet aircraft, designed in the 1980s by the Antonov design bureau in the Ukrainian SSR, part of the Soviet Union at the time.
The plane has a payload of 120,000 kilograms (265,000 pounds), and the door size alone is 251×173 inches. The load volume is 750 metres cubed. It requires Ottawa’s longest runway, 3,000 metres long, YOW’s north-south runway.
Big as it is, the plane’s big brother, the An-225 Mriya, is larger. The world’s largest plane has a world-record airlifted payload of 280 tons or 559,577 pounds.
