Iain Stewart has been reappointed as president of the National Research Council, this time for a five-year term.

Stewart is finishing his original two-year term this summer. His reappointment was announced Wednesday by federal ministers Navdeep Bains (Innovation, Science and Economic Development) and Kirsty Duncan (Science).

He inherits a growing budget which stands at $1.1 billion since this spring’s federal budget. Stewart has a mandate to expand and “deepen” research, and to create a new post at the NRC called chief science advisor, “developing the next generation of NRC research leaders and encouraging a more diverse NRC.”

NRC presidents are traditionally appointed for fixed terms.

Stewart is a former Treasury Board senior manager and former assistant vice-president of research at Dalhousie University.
