There’s a new ATM scam becoming popular in parts of Quebec, and Gatineau police want you to be cautious.
It works this way: The crook installs a gadget in the card slot of the ATM. This prevents you from getting your card back at the end of your transaction.
As you do your banking, a camera or a false keyboard installed over the real one records you putting in your PIN number. When you leave, the person collects your card and uses it, with your PIN.
Here’s how to stop this, police suggest:
• If the card slot doesn’t look right, don’t put your card into it. Call police instead.
• If you can’t get your card back, call the bank or card provider right away.
• Cover your hand when you type the PIN number.
• Don’t accept help from the friendly stranger who just happens to be nearby when you run into trouble, and report any suspicious people in the area to police.
