Ottawa Fire Services’ spokeswoman was walking the fire safety talk even on a day off Wednesday when a carpet cleaners’ van caught fire in her Elmvale-area driveway.

“Got to practice what I preach,” Danielle Cardinal joked on Twitter.

She asked the cleaners to call 911 while she grabbed a fire extinguisher (one of two in her home, naturally) and, from a safe distance, put the P.A.S.S. method into practice.

P is for pull the pin while holding the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.

A is aim low, pointing the extinguisher at the base of the fire.

The first S is for squeeze the lever slowly and evenly and the second S for sweep the nozzle from side-to-side.

A crew from Station 31 on Conroy Road arrived and a lieutenant used a thermal-imaging camera to make sure the flames hadn’t spread through the engine compartment.

Then Cardinal took to social media to spread the #extinguishersave.

All in a day off’s work.

Exciting morning – carpet cleaning van caught fire in my driveway. Got to practice what I preach – grabbed extinguisher, stayed safe distance fr fire & P.A.S.S.
